sound practice in action
Karen is an audiologist and a LSLS certified auditory-verbal therapist with a bilateral severe-to-profound sensorineural hearing loss who received her first cochlear implant (CI) in 2009 in Germany. In this documentary, Karen invites the course participant to observe the client and family-centered care she received from her aural rehabilitation therapist in Toronto, Canada and her ENT and CI surgeon in Freiburg, Germany prior to and following her CI surgery. Karen shares the research and evidence that supported important decisions she made regarding her care pre- and post CI surgery including: listening effort; the evolving cochlear implant candidacy criteria; post-CI aural rehabilitation; health literacy, and use of counselling strategies to support the patient and family pre- and post cochlear implantation. In the course resource, a valuable and comprehensive list of aural rehabilitation strategies and suggestions for support that can be incorporated into the CI patientís daily life and care when preparing for life with an activated cochlear implant will be provided.
