Beyond Academics: Social-Emotional Wellness for Children and Youth who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing

Cheryl DeConde Johnson, EdM, FAAA

Cheryl DeConde-Johnson is a former consultant with the Colorado Department of Education where she was responsible for deaf education and audiology services from 1998-2006. Prior to that time she was an educational audiologist and program coordinator for the public school deaf and hard of hearing program in Greeley, Colorado. She is currently a lecturer in several AuD programs including the University of Colorado, Boulder, University of Northern Colorado, and Central Michigan University as well as adjunct faculty in the deaf education program at the University of Arizona. She is active as a consultant, program evaluator, writer, as well as a trainer for the National Association of State Directors of Special Education (NASDSE), and is a co-founder and President of the Board of Directors for Hands & Voices. Dr. Johnson has a grown daughter who is deaf.

Dr. Johnson’s special interests include promoting outcomes comparable to hearing peers for all children who are deaf and hard of hearing, communication access, and family involvement. Drawing upon her own experiences raising a daughter with hearing loss, she enjoys assisting families as they face similar issues and challenges. She is a co-author of the Educational Audiology Handbook, as well as numerous other articles and book chapters. She has frequently presented nationally and internationally on topics related to audiology and management issues in the school environment associated with children and youth who are deaf and hard of hearing as well as various topics in deaf education. Dr. Johnson has received numerous awards and recognitions for her work. Most recently she was honored by the Alumni Association of the University of Northern Colorado as the recipient of the 2006 Trailblazer Award and by Phonak with the establishment of the Cheryl DeConde Johnson Award for Excellence in Educational Audiology.

Carrie Spangler, Au.D., CCC-A, F-AAA

Carrie Spangler is an educational audiologist with the Stark County Educational Service Center in Ohio. She received her undergraduate degree in communication disorders at Bowling Green and her Masters degree in audiology from the University of Akron and her Doctor of Audiology from A.T. Stills University. Carrie co-founded Hearing Impaired Teens Interacting Together (HIT IT), an advocacy and social support group in Stark County; and she and Stark County audiologists developed the SPEAK Program (Stark Project for Educating Audition in Kids), an auditory/oral preschool program to develop spoken listening and language in young hearing-impaired children.  She serves on the committee for the Viking Victory Run; is an active member of Quota International of Massillon; the chairperson of Quota’s Sound Beginnings program and is one of the developers of the Guide to Access Planning program. Carrie worked with the state legislature to develop and pass a bill implementing universal newborn hearing screening in all birthing hospitals in Ohio. Carrie currently supervises field experiences for doctoral students in educational audiology from local colleges and has presented nationally on the topic of supporting children and youth with hearing loss in the academic setting and their families.  She received the Honors of the Association from the Ohio School Speech Pathology and Audiology Coalition; was named Volunteer of the Year at the Massillon Quota Club and is the recipient of the Cheryl DeConde Johnson Award in 2012 (a national award).

Music training and bilateral hearing help children using cochlear implants hear emotion

Karen Gordon, PhD, CCC-A, Reg. CASLPO

Dr. Karen A. Gordon works at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) as a Scientist in the Neurosciences & Mental Health program at the Research Institute and as Director of Research in Archie’s Cochlear Implant Laboratory. She is an Associate Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery and a Graduate Faculty Member in the Institute of Medical Science at the University of Toronto. She is also affiliated with the Department of Speech Language Pathology.

Dr. Gordon received her PhD (2005) and B.Sc. (1991) at the University of Toronto and her MA in Audiology (1993) at Northwestern University. She is a Registered Audiologist (Reg. CASLPO, CCC-A), a Fellow of the American Academy of Audiology (AAA), and a member of the Association for Research in Otolaryngology (ARO) and the Society of Ear, Nose and Throat Advances in Children (SENTAC).

Dr. Gordon’s research focuses on auditory development in children who are deaf and use cochlear implants. Her early work examined the role of a unilateral implant to promote changes in the auditory brain stem, thalamus and cortex. She is presently interested in the effects of bilateral cochlear implants in these areas. She has been awarded grant funding for her work on binaural auditory development in children receiving bilateral cochlear implants from both of the Canadian Institute’s for Health Research, the Hearing Foundation of Canada, and the SickKids Foundation.

Raising Jason: Our Family’s Story

Jason was diagnosed with a bilateral moderate to severe hearing loss and wears hearing aids. His mother, Jennifer, brought Jason for weekly auditory-verbal therapy sessions at the Learning to Listen Foundation at North York General Hospital’s Phillips House. Jason now attends his neighborhood high school and is living life to the fullest. This inspiration session will provide insight on the family’s view of the challenges and joys associated with growing up with a hearing loss, and what life is like today for Jason as a teen.
