Carrie Spangler brings both a personal and professional perspective to the field of audiology.  Carrie was born with a severe to profound hearing loss in both ears.  She was identified at the age of 4, and has worn hearing aids since.  She attended mainstream school and received services to develop listening and spoken language skills.  Carrie gives thanks to her parents who never gave up and always encouraged her to maximize her potential.

Carrie is currently employed at The University of Akron School of Speech Language Pathology and Audiology.  Carrie is the coordinator of the Hear and Learn Educational Outreach Program.  This program provides audiology services to public schools while offering clinical/community opportunities for graduate and doctoral students to learn.  Her areas of interest include educational audiology, teens and support groups, advocacy, and humanitarian audiology.

Carrie received her bachelor’s degree from Bowling Green State University in Communication Disorders, her Master’s degree from The University of Akron, and her Doctor of Audiology degree from the Arizona School of Health Sciences.  Previously, Carrie was employed at Stark County Educational Service Center for 13 years as an educational audiologist providing services to children with hearing loss in the public schools.

Carrie is the 2012 recipient of a national award, the Cheryl DeConde-Johnson Award for Best Practices in Educational/Pediatric Audiology.  She has presented locally, nationally, and internationally on topics related to educational and pediatric audiology.  She has publications in peer reviewed journals and is currently co-authoring 3 chapters in books that will be released in 2014.  She is the co-chairperson for the Ohio Universal Newborn Hearing Screening Subcommitee of the Medical Advisory Board.  She is active in community service organizations, state and national professional organizations.
